Creating an efficient home office

Do you have one of those rooms that are too small for just about everything, but needs to be used for everything? You need a home office, a guest room, a craft or sewing room but the only space available is that too small room. It's time to get creative! By efficiently using the space available - especially the walls you can make this room useful and inviting as well. The first step is to make a list of the functions and activities that will need to be accommodated. Then a list of the gadgets and equipment needed, including furniture and filing or storage needs. Measure all of the existing pieces you own that may be used in the room. Note which items could be replaced by smaller, more efficient pieces. Now you need to measure the room and put your dimensions on graph paper. One-quarter inch is best and most universal when using furniture templates. If possible, this is the time to have your room empty. It will be easier to imagine the finished space without the clutter of misplaced items piled up. Make sure you measure and note all electrical outlets, cable boxes, light switches and windows, doors and closets. Don't forget to note which way your doors swing. An important part of home office design is assessing your power needs. Add up the wattage of your office equipment (and related office design features such as lighting). You may be able to cut down on your power needs by "combining" some of your office equipment. For example, instead of having a separate printer, fax, copier and scanner, you could have one multifunction machine that performed all these functions. Determine the best place for each piece of office furniture and equipment by running through a work test. Whatever you use frequently should be close to hand and easy to access. If it's not, move it. For instance, if your work involves using the phone a lot, your phone should be in a position where you don't have to get up or reach awkwardly to use it. If your work involves handling and filing a lot of paper, your filing cabinet needs to be close enough that you can get to it with a few steps - or even better, have filing drawers within your desk that are close to hand. Before you begin the color and decorating aesthetics of your home office design, plug in all your equipment and try to use it, as you would on a normal working day. If you experience electrical danger signs, such as breakers popping or lights dimming when various pieces of equipment are operating have an electrician check your circuitry and see if any simple rewiring can be done. In my experience, houses, especially older houses, are often wired very eccentrically and need electrical updating. Chances are extremely high that the existing lighting in the proposed location of your small or home office is inadequate for workspace needs. Few residences have rows of fluorescent lights installed, for example, as commercial office spaces do. While you don't need to go that far, you do need to incorporate strong overhead lighting in your home office design - and in many cases, that means purchasing and installing new or additional light fixtures. Various types of track lighting are easy to find and relatively easy to install. When choosing the lighting for your home office, sit in your proposed workspace and determining how much illumination you need to work efficiently and where the light should be placed. An office with inadequate lighting is not only useless but can lead to all kinds of health problems from headaches through neck and shoulder pain. Determine the best place for each piece of office equipment and furniture by running through a work test. Whatever you use frequently should be close to hand and easy to access. If it's not, move it. notNeutral tablewaretags: kitchen/dining, lighting

Rios Clementi Hale Studios (notNeutral) is a multidisciplinary design team based in hip and trendy Melrose in West LA, and specifically avoids “lowest common denominator” products. This kind of attitude is pervasive in their products, which range from garden accessories to tableware. We focus on the latter in this post; above: notNeutral’s limited edition Designers’ Gilt plates are adorned with familiar patterns ranging from lace doilies to spirographs that are further interpolated along a polar axis. The 12.5″ plates carry a high price tag at nearly $80, but that’s because the designs are made of 22K gold. notNeutral’s more conservative casual china still skirts the Beverly Hills: Edge / Leather Sofa Sets of style with four designs: Leaves, Letters, Links and Circuit. Despite their rather mundane names, these self-contained works of modern art are difficult to find at any traditional retailer. Color combinations alternate between b/w and shades of green, blue and brown. The latter colors seem to be inspired by Nature; notNeutral, but perhaps “natural”. Much more seasonal are the Studios’ trivets, which basically consist of two themes: Fall and Winter. Their “Fallin” Trivet collection bakes the intense reds and oranges of Fall onto leaf-shaped steel cutouts with neoprene feet, while “Frosty” is the more elegant of the two with beautiful and delicate snowflake patterns painted in shades of blue. Although perhaps not as interesting as the china and trivets above, notNeutral’s placemats fit their role perfectly; subtle birch mats with cork feet are screen printer with their now familiar patterns, and then sealed to protect against food and liquids. Also available in coaster sets, these complementary tableware accessories have the innate beauty of woodgrain and the style of minimalist, rounded corners. As a final touch, no dinner is complete without the comforting ambience of candlelight; 80% soy based wax candles are scented with 10% essential oils. The beautiful glass cups are decorated with contemporary botanical designs that include bamboo, sycamore and pomegranate, and come primarily in green with hints of baby blue. Modern "Solid Wood" Dining Room Furniture from IZM

The "less is more" concept may apply to the clean lines of IZM's solid wood dining room furniture and how great it looks with the simplest of features. The "ay2bn" solid wood rectangular dining table sports a generous top that floats on four legs that are nicely tucked into the Beverly Hills: Edge / Leather Sofa Sets of the top. I especially like the fact the table is apron free which gives more room to move and allows the thinness of the top to be fully realized. (coming soon) The Profile buffet sideboard is a perfect match, and also features a hardware free front and high-rise leg structure that keeps it light looking. Once again we see the beauty of the solid wood construction that add real class the IZM collection of prairie modern minimalist furniture that was "designed and built to be collected and passed down". The Profile sideboard is available in two or three doors with two large drawers. 3 door 74w x 16d x 29h 2 door 60w x 16d x 29h Continue reading "Modern "Solid Wood" Dining Room Furniture from IZM" »

Pick Folding Chairs for the Space Conscious

How about folding chairs that can also be used as wall art? Dror Benshetrit created "Pick" folding chairs that can do just this. We have a lot of readers in small apartments and lofts where space is a huge premium. This design is a great fit for entertaining when you need extra seating and at the same time adding an aesthetic element to a wall when the seating is not required. Via.

Vibrating Windows to Stop Outside Sounds

I live in a crowder area, and I hear cars, people, all day long. Somethimes all this noise can be quite disturbing, but a team of researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt, Germany, have developed a vibrating window that negates noise generated by sources as loud and shrieking as jet planes. A window acts like a loudspeaker and a membrane. If you control the vibration of the window, you can control transmitted noise in such a way that it is not acting like a membrane or a loudspeaker,” said Thilo Bein, head of the business unit for energy, environment and health at the institute. Traditionally, to obstruct intrusion of noise through windows, engineers thicken the glass to double or even triple panes. But there is disadvantage to it; the process drives up the cost of construction. Now, Bein and his team have developed a method that thwarts vibration with vibration, effectively negating the interference of outside noise through glass windows. The trick, they say, is to stop the sound waves in their tracks. - Source - Discovery

Heirs won't take 'Brando' chair sitting down

Marlon Brando's heirs are suing a Canadian furniture company after making the company an offer it refused. The late actor's family has been trying for months to get Palliser Furniture Ltd. to stop marketing a line of plush home theater chairs dubbed the Brando without a licensing agreement. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages but claims sales of the chair "exceed several million dollars on a worldwide basis."
