Custom Furniture with a Modern Flair by Martin Sprouse
Designer Martin Sprouse has a firm belief when creating his furniture pieces. His philosophy is simple, "custom furniture is not about choosing options; it's about creating them". Here are two wonderful designs that have roots in the modern movement, and geometry in their construction. The 3Chord multi-function work station started with a basic rectangle and received new life and added surface area with contrasting solid walnut additions against a white Corian top. A bead blasted stainless steel structure adds a classy look to this timeless and modern desk. H 29.5" x W 72" x D 34" Sprouse managed to create some visual drama from the otherwise clean straight lines of his Superflat expandable dining table. The opposing wood grains of the surface extension are contrasted by powder coated steel which fit the particular surrounding of the project the dining table was created for. josef hoffmann, art nouveau and art decotags: livingroom
Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) was an Austrian architect who managed to straddle a number of important art movements during a time of transition between traditional and (then) d furnitureing Art Nouveau and Art Deco design. His focus on the latter styles made him an important designer of the early 20th century, although his own work at the time was often unpopular with his patrons and clients who desired more historically- inspired work. Above: the Kubus chair and sofa are the most recognizable of Hoffmann’s pieces, with regularly repeating padded cubes. Even today, this level of segmentation is not easily reproduced with numerous seams that require craftsmanship of the highest caliber.
The Club Collection (1910) is an early art deco piece with classic elephant arms while the Haus Koller is more reflective of the sinuous curves found in Art Nouveau. Both possess similar vertical seamwork, with the Club being the more tightly integrated and geometric of the two.
Hoffmann’s Sitzmaschine (”Sitting Machine”) is a blend of the purely functional and the ornate; the exposed, industrial appearance of the chair is balanced by decorative knobs, a square grid on the back and curved armrests. Designed for Vienna’s Purkersdorf Sanatorium, this chair has seen numerous iterations including a version with a supple leather backrest.
The Salon Chair is actually a posthumous work, derived entirely from a signed but undated Hoffmann drawing and only seeing production in 2005. This is a chair that appeals to today’s more contemporary/transitional sensibilities as opposed to Hoffmann’s earlier, more ornate work. The Pink Punk tall vase is a hand-made vase made of translucent acrylic in an aluminium frame wrapped with real leather. With its translucent character, the vase displays the stems of flowers in an interesting way. It is a limited edition, only 500 pieces, with each one having a serial number.
Influential Mid-Century Modern Furniture Designers
Furniture design has evolved throughout the centuries as different materials became available and as professionals or tradesmen in charge of designing the furniture in that time period changed. Wood is a traditional furnishing material because it is abundantly available, sturdy, easily shaped, and because some of the first furniture makers were also carpenters. Other materials that were used in ancient furnishings are stone and metal.
As mankind began to progress and as more specialized professions came about, eventually architects and popular artists who specialized in furnishings set the trend for the time periods décor. The onset of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th and 19th century began a turning point in human society, especially as it made furnishings once only available to the wealthy available to a broader range of society.
The 20th century brought with it the most rapid and revolutionary period of furniture design in history, producing what can be considered classic furniture pieces from new materials like plywood, chrome plated steel, new fabrics, and specialty materials like acrylic and fiberglass. True visionaries designed these classic pieces whose beauty and modern appearance are still popular today.
Charles and Ray Eames
Above is a late picture of the husband and wife team of Charles and Ray Eames, who are almost always pictured together. Charles was an architect with a Beverly Hills: Passion / Leather Bedrooms for modern design and furnishings. Ray was an artist, designer, and filmmaker who shared her husbands Beverly Hills: Passion / Leather Bedroomss. Together they created some of the most iconic mid-century modern furniture pieces of the 20th century.
