Do Lo Res Sofa by Ron Arad

“Do Lo Res” sofa is a very creative design by Ron Arad. Do Lo Res is a very up-to-the-minute sofa composed of several soft, square-based cube- or rectangular-shaped units of various heights. The units are arranged in rows to form the shape of the sofa, and fixed to a platform by steel pins. The units all have a 21×21cm footprint while varying in height from 27.5cm to 83cm. They are made of different-density polyurethane foam; a stiffer foam is used at the bottom of each unit in order to grip the steel pin, while softer foam at the top ensures optimum comfort. Do Lo Res units may be rearranged to form a wide variety of shapes and compositions. The “Do Lo Res” sofa is a product that is apparently very simple but which in fact has a great complexity of construction, structural and production. - Via

kiwi collectiontags: livingroom

AN OVERSTUFFED SEAT on a tiny minimalist frame, Iker’s Kiwi armchair makes an awkward first impression but grows on you quickly. maude bedtags: bedroom

THOUGHTFUL AND MINIMALIST, Maude’s modular features betray its humble, ground-hugging design. Chief amongst these is a pair of panels on either end; included primarily for proportionality reasons, they can be rotated sideways to serve as a recessed cabinet and upwards to hold backrests. The bed is also doubly efficient; in addition to requiring only one person to build it, the entire piece–frame, supports, shelves and slats–is constructed from a single sheet of resin coated plywood. maude.info Via: MoCoLoCo Popularity: 6% [?]

Pictures from Chicago Institute of Art Part 1

I recently got back from a trip to Chicago. The weather was fantastic and the city was bubbling with things to to. I had a great time while I was in the city. One of the highlights was visiting the Chicago Institute of Art. I had heard a lot of things about the museum from friends and just in reading. I can now affirm all of those things that you hear that this is one of the top museums in the world. I was so impressed with their collection. Amazingly, they allow you to take pictures as long as you do not use a flash. I took many pictures of their decorative arts collection that I want to share with you. I have been so busy since I have gotten back that I have had little time. Thus, I have not had time to properly label each photo, but want to post it to share with my readers. I have many more photos that I will get up tonight.

bova day bedtags: livingroom

MINIMALISM creates as often as it eliminates; this leather day bed by Bova Furniture has been clearly reduced to the bare minimum; double-stitched button tufting is the only real flourish on this otherwise pragmatic piece. However, it can be said that the very process of reduction has given the bed an additional use: its low profile also allows it to double as a stylish, extra-wide d furniture Popularity: 3% [?]

The Hillclimber House in LA

Up until now, I was dead sure houses can’t climb, but the talented people from Kovac Architects made me reconsider my position. In the Pacific Pallisades of Los Angeles, they managed to design a house with a contour that climbs up the steep hillside. They named it (how else?) the Hillclimber House. Using lots of stone accents and wood, they managed to create a refined minimalist but modern design with classic accents. It’s “a simple hierarchy of spaces is reflected in the forms and materials used.” And did you expect to see a “between-walls” pool knowing that this house … climbs? - via Beverly Hills: Trend / Leather Sofa Setsir

brent comber: sculpted natural woodtags: kitchen/dining, livingroom

As a fourth generation Vancouverite in a city that is itself barely 150 years old, furniture designber is definitely a rarity. Vancouver also traces its origins to the lumber industry (specifically the Hastings Mill), so it is entirely appropriate that he makes his living from woodworking. Most of Brent’s pieces are reclaimed or recycled, so his work is not only about honoring the Pacific Northwest’s history but preserving it for future generations. The overarching theme in Brent’s work is a blending of the urban and natural worlds; above: Originals is a collection of sculpted geometric shapes against natural wood, most of which incorporate slight curves that heighten the sophistication of the pieces. I particularly like the way that the subtle curvature helps to elegantly accentuate the grain of the wood (as opposed to the more savage and primal pieces of chista). Quad is similarly geometric and a bit more functional as it also serves as a table base. The base features four piece segmentation with a slight twist at the top for added drama. Available in Douglas fir and red cedar with multiple finishes, I definitely prefer it in black with a square glass top (it’s furniture designmended you supply your own). Both the Alder and Shattered collections reveal beautiful patterns no matter what direction you view them from. The Alder collection furniture designposed of alder rounds, while Shattered is formed from tightly packed shards of wood. In both collections, the relatively ordinary external geometries contrast sharply with the chaotic and fragmented realities within. Psychoanalysis aside: furniture designber’s work is something I’d love to see in my own home; his website is below if you feel similarly furniture design Popularity: 6% [?]

Pant Hangers for Your Prints

Sometimes you don’t have to spend oodles of money for great design. A simple idea, some DIY skills and voila! A project that delivers visual impact on a small budget. Jean, a soft goods designer and one half of Ladies and Gentleman Home started using pant hangers as a inexpensive solution to hanging her prints years ago. She was most amused to find that the pant hanger idea was featured in the summer issue of Oprah’s O at Home magazine. Jean adds, “I love pant hangers myself and think that they are elegant, well-designed utilitarian objects. I have a whole collection of vintage hangers in all different sizes, materials and forms.” She uses them either simply on picture hooks or on a wooden grid frame set behind her sofa. The result are stunning wall displays. The beauty of her design is you can easily switch the prints around whenever you feel like it! - Via
